Automatic numbering of exercises in textbook

I'm usually a LaTeX user, but at this moment I have to use MSWord in a
collaborative work.

We are writing a textbook in mathematics, with text and exercises. The
exercises are numbered. At the moment they are numbered by hand, which
means that every time you add or remove an exercise, you have to
renumber all the following exercises. And the answer section! And
references!

I suspect that this is not the most sensible way to arrange things,
and would appreciate hints of ways to improve matters.

Ideally, the end result would be like this:

Exercises number themselves. Anytime you add, remove or reorder
exercises, all numbers should be updated. If an exercise is removed,
its answer should be removed. When reordering, the answers should be
reordered.

I suspect that keeping the answer section completely in sync is
difficult, so if the numbers updates and answers belonging to
exercises no longer present get the number ??? or something, that is
enough.

Any suggestions on how to achieve this? What topics should I search
for in the manual? (I find the help included in the installation hard
to use. The text is quite good, but the search functions aren't, so
finding the relevant section takes an unreasonable amount of time.)
Any suggestion on a good manual, by the way? One intended for persons
who want to do stuff like this.

P.S. If anyone is interested in how to make this work in LaTeX, I can
provide help. I think it took me about an hour the first time I tried,
but now I know the five minutes version. May save someone else's time!
