automatic numbering with more than 13 levels

Glenna

I have a document that I am setting up with 13 levels (see
format below) and with the Table of Contents.
ARTICLE I (Heading 1)
Section 1.01 (Heading 2)
Section 1.02 (Heading 2)
ARTICLE II (Heading 1)
Section 2.01 (Heading 3)
Section 2.02 (Heading 3)
ARTICLE III (Heading 1)
Section 3.01 (Heading 4)
Section 3.02 (Heading 4)
etc.
by the time I get to ARTICLE VIII, I am at Heading 9 and
need more 'Headings'. I need to set up to ARTICLE XIII.
What am I doing wrong?
Thank you for any help

What you're doing wrong is that ARTICLE I, ARTICLE II, ARTICLE III, etc.,
are all Level 1. Section 1.01, etc., are all Level 2. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html for
instructions on how to set this up correctly, and note that in order to have
I in Heading 1 become 1 in Heading 2, you have to check the box for "Legal
style numbering." If you'll select the pane in the lower left corner of the
List Gallery (which already has the Article I, Section 1.01 formatting you
want, you'll be halfway done.

Hi Glenna

I think you need a bit of a re-think on how to apply your styles. You should use Heading 1 for every paragraph at the "Article"
level. And use Heading 2 for every paragraph at the "Section" level. There's a picture at the bottom of this page that shows the
general pattern: http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/concepts/styles/.

You would only need to use Heading 3 if you had, for example something like this:
ARTICLE I (Heading 1)
Section 1.01 (Heading 2)

Part B (Heading 3)
Part B (Heading 3)
Section 1.02 (Heading 2)

For info on how to set up the numbering, see
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word Document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

So in your case, you don't need more than 13 levels. In your case you'll only need the 2 levels (Heading 1 for Articles, Heading 2
for Sections).

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU very much. I just finished my document. Now
that I understand what I did wrong, it was easy to fix and
any future documents will be much easier to set up.
