Automatic Numbering

Tri

Dear Friends,

Let say we use an automatic numbering for the document below:

1. Definition

1.1 Instruction
[1.2 Explanation]
1.3 Conclusion.

2. Attachment

What should I do to create an automatice numbering as the above example?
On a legal draft documents some times using the above automatic numbering.

Thank you for your kind explanation.

I would advise *not* using automatic numbering. You'll just tear your hair
out. This is a very good place to use plain-text numbering because you
probably don't *want* numbering to update automatically. Turn off all the
"helpful" AutoFormat As You Type features that will try to convert your
numbers into auto numbering. Then set up styles (perhaps starting with the
built in List styles [not List Number, but just List) that have the needed
indents. If you want the brackets "outdented" so that the periods align, set
a decimal tab stop in your style and tab to it to type the number (this will
also take care of double digits).

The key factor in determining whether or not to use automatic
numbering is: how often are numbered paragraphs likely to be added or
deleted, and how many numbered paragraphs are there to change? If
hardly any numbering will need to be changed during the course of
editing, then I'd agree with Susan that automatic numbering will cause
you to tear your hair out for no good reason.

If you anticipate a lot of adding and/or deleting of numbered
paragraphs, then it's off to Shauna Kelly's website for the
fundamendals of automatic numbering.

The best way of solving the problem of

[1.2 Explanation

is to talk your boss into letting you use

1.2 [Explanation

a workaround that's a million times easier than the actual solution.

But if he/she absolutely insists on the bracket in front of the
number, then you can do the following.

Instead of using the Heading 2 style to number the paragraph,
substitute a LISTNUM field in place of the style and put the bracket
in front of it, like so:

[{ LISTNUM \L 2 } Explanation

The \L switch stands for level, so if it's Heading 1 you're
substituting for it would be \L 1; Heading 3, \L 3, etc.

"Talk-boss-out-of-it" is the preferred technique. - Bruce
