Automatic Paragraph Numbering (Word 2002)

Traycie

I'm creating a large document where Level 1 of the
automatic paragraph numbering needs to show as 1.1 (rather
than just 1.)

Leaving Level 1 blank isn't an option, because then it
just shows blank.1.

I can insert a manual 1. before the auto 1, but then have
to manually change it to 2 when I reach 2.1, 3. when I
reach 3.1, etc.

I'm hoping this method won't cause problems as I use cross-
referencing?

Any suggestions as to how I can make it all automatic!?!

Thanks.

I am sure the gurus will have a better answer, but one way
to get the result you want is to set up a Level 1 and then
what you are referring to as Level 1 would become Level 2,
with legal numbering checked. Between your sections you
would put a Level 1 paragraph and format it (including the
paragraph marker) as hidden. It would show in Normal
view, but not in Print Layout View or in the printed
document. Good luck.
