Automatic paragraph numbering

P

Peter Olcott

How do I implement automatic paragraph numbering? I want this to include
references to paragraphs numbers too. I want to be able to insert a paragraph in
the middle of all of the paragraphs, and have all the paragraph numbers
including references to these numbers automatically adjusted. How do I do this?

The material mentioned on the link will not solve my problem for two reasons:
(1) I have MS Word 97.
(2) I need something more complext than the material refers to.
I am making paragraph numbering in my patent. These numbers muts be enclosed in
sqaure brackets. Example: [0237]

Perhaps you need line number? File-->Page setup, Layout tab. Choose Line
numbers...
However, Outline numbering would be more appropriate if you really don't
want each LINE to have a number, and you want to 1. and a) and, etc.... :)

Hope it helps!

You can set up a style using the methods shown on Shauna's site that have
your brackets.

Use the following SEQ field construction to get numbers like that

{ SEQ Para \# "'['0000']'" }

I would set up an autotext entry that consisted of the above field
construction followed by a tab with the paragraph formatted to have an
appropriate hanging indent. Then, whenever you want to insert a new
paragraph, you would insert that autotext entry.

If you insert a new paragraph between existing paragraphs, it will be
necessary to use Ctrl+a to select everything in the document and then press
F9 to update the fields.

You can include brackets in the "Number format" for your paragraph
numbering. Everything described in Shauna's article will work in Word 97.

I am not sure that by those methods you can get numbering preceded by as
many zeros as required so that the number is always 4 digits. That is
[0001], [0010], [0100].

This must have been the way that my original patent attorney did it. I tried
this with the file that he created, and it worked. Will this also work when one
is referring to these paragraphs in the body of a paragraph, using these
numbers? I don't understand how to set this up myself. I don't know what a SEQ
field construction is, or how to set it up.
