'Automatic Save' keeps defaulting

terence

I change the time for automatic saves by using the "Tool, Options, Save"
process. However, when I close down the computer, the time reverts to the
default.

Hello Terence,

You've landed in a discussion group for users of Word on the Mac. We don't
have automatic saving in Mac versions (we have "Save AutoRecover information
every [n] minutes").

Although there are several people here who are also highly expert in PC
versions of Word, and they may come by soon, you may get quicker results on
the general Word discussion forums. Start at

I'm afraid I don't have the answer to your question as to why the setting
isn't being retained - On the PC it could be a Registry issue, so you'd do
best in a PC Word group as Clive suggested.

However, regardless of PC or Mac, I wanted to make sure you're not operating
under a very common misconception - No version of Word has an "automatic
saves" feature.

What you're referring to is the "Automatically Save *AutoRecover Data*"
feature which is *not* the same as saving your file automatically. The
autorecovery file is separate from your working file & is only used in the
event the system/software crashes while you have the file open. Once the
file is closed normally the autorecovery data file is deleted.

IOW, You must still save your file as you work - AutoRecovery *does not*
save to your actual file. The autorecovery data file is separate and
primarily based on what has been saved. If the autorecovery file ever has to
be used you will most likely find that many unsaved changes will not have
been retained. Please know that I am not criticizing the feature - just
clarifying what it actually is intended to do :)

Hi Terence:

You better have a chat to your System Administrator.

It soulds like you do not have WRITE permission to the Word Data Key in your
Registry.

You might like to suggest that without that permission, Word will not run
properly, and eventually you will live in crash city.

You haven't give us all information needed such as your permitions as
indicated by John or version of Word do you have, but in 2003 there's
option Help>detect and reapir. This will effect all Office
application! I would first backup all your custom settings as
personal.xls, normal.dot, xlsurgal... before running detect and
repair.
Also what bout viruses and spy presense on your PC? They can tweak the
registry. You can run Adaware for personal purposes for free:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php. Do you
have any addin - 3rd party utility installed into word?

Hi LC:

I know that Adaware is free, but it is now so out-of-date I could not
possibly recommend it. Running it on a Windows XP SP2 system is more likely
to cause problems than fix any :)
