Automatic shudown of computer

R

Ric

Hi

My computer running 2003 Windows XP performs automatic shutdowns without ANY
prior notice. From running application to black scrreen in a split second.
Can happen when playing games or using MS Word for example. Does not happen
with same time intervals. Not sasser worm, has run 3 tools and found no
sasser. Any suggestions?

Hardware: processor overheating, power supply fan slow or not running, etc.
Take the case cover off and check that all fans are running freely: you'll
probably need to remove the dust that builds up in the fans anyway. Try
running with the case lid removed and see if it still occurs.

I had the same symptoms. What finally fixed it was a new, much larger
heat sink and fan on the CPU -- cost, about US$40.

To keep an eye on the CPU temperature, get the freeware Motherboard
Monitor from http://mbm.livewiredev.com and run it in the tray. When
you see the reading start to spike up, you know you have a temperature
problem.

My husband had the same problem on his laptop. He diagnosed it as being a
fan problem, but by the time the fan was replaced he also needed a new
motherboard and other parts (about $600 total for a five-year-old ThinkPad).

5 years old is really ancient in the world of computing! Though, if you had
put it in your car, I'm sure it would have run for another 25 years.

That was my point. He really debated the expense, especially since he has a
brand-new state-of-the-art Dell desktop. But he really wanted to have a
laptop, too, and after researching what was currently available in the
market, he concluded that he couldn't buy a laptop with the same
functionality as his ThinkPad for $425 (which was what IBM wanted for the
repair--he'd already spend $120+ in fruitless local repairs, including an
unreturnable IBM part [CPU fan] that didn't solve the problem). In any case,
the repair was probably quicker than ordering and getting a new computer: he
called, the IBM contractor overnighted an Authorized Return box, he packed
up the machine and overnighted it back on a Wednesday, and the repaired
machine was returned the following Tuesday.

That's one very positive aspect of ThinkPads: IBM's service centres are
good.
