automatic uneven columns on odd and even pages

I have a 40 page document that I wish to format with
uneven columns, but as I am printing back to back I want
the narrow column on the left on an uneven page and on the
right on an even page. Is there an easy way to do this
without having to format each page individually?

Apparently not. You'd think this would happen automatically (or at least be
an option) if you choose "Mirror margins," but it doesn't/isn't.

But isn't "mirror margins" to solve binding issues? I'm trying to picture
reading the document Shona describes and it feels very strange to have the
narrow column switching from side to side as I turn a page. I'm looking in
a different space on the page for continuing text.

Unless you are reading flip-top instead of like a book. Conceivably setting
page layout to duplex *and* bind on the short end might shift the text
automatically??? That would make sense, anyhow....

if you want to use the narrow column as a "margin" where you put, say,
special comments, symbols, etc., then use a frame (make it part of a
style) for your narrow "column". You can define it's position to be
"outside" then.
