Automatic update error

T

tony pio

When I turn on my laptop and Windows XP is launched, I immediately get a
warning telling me that an error has occurred in the Automatic Update program
and it must be shut down. I am asked whether a report should be sent.
Regardless of which I choose, send or don't send, the window reappears with
the same question and this goes on for 4 or 5 times repeating the same
message. My security is set at default levels and my Automatic Update is
enabled.
What is going on?

Ben, "installing all available updates from MU" will probably be very
difficult if the Automatic Updates is not working on that system.

Tony, try downloading and installing the Windows Update Agent from
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=43264

Run the installation package with the /wuforce switch to force the
installation of the WUA. This may resolve your issues with the startup of
the AU service.

That was exactly why I wanted him to go there so I could see if it worked or
not. :)

Hmmmm ... okay.... I think I see... just a difference in approach. :)

You wanted to double check that the poster was actually experiencing a
malfunction, before proceeding.

I took his word on that point, and offered a non-intrusive 'fix', which,
assuming there is an error in the service startup, has a high probability of
fixing the problem with no further action required on anybody's part.

But if there really wasn't an issue my fix is easy. Now how about we stop
arguing Tony hasn't even been back to try it yet!

Frankly, I don't expect Tony to come back. :-(

He posted a /problem/ from the web forum interface. You sent him off to do
something that /probably/ will not work, and as a result, he'll end up with
a bad taste in his mouth for the quality of help he gets from Microsoft
Communities.

(a) Send a poster to do something that will /probably/ fail, based on the
information given.

(b) Send a poster to do something that will /probably/ fix the problem,
based on the information given.

You tell me which you'd rather have if /you/ were the one posting the
problem?

You're naivete about the dropout rate of web-based posters in Microsoft
newsgroups is frightening. Either that, or it's arrogance. I prefer to think
the former.

Nevertheless, it is a fact.... even for those who get /correct/ answers to
their questions.
