automatic update keeps incurring a problem

Hi;

What version of Windows are you using? What version of Office?

When did Automatic Updates stop working, and do you recall any events (new
software installed, etc.) taking place about that same time?

Just as a total guess, give this a try:

Boot into Safe Mode
Find the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and delete the entire folder
Open Control Panel, then Internet Options. On the General tab elect to
Delete files, check the option to delete offline files, and then let that
complete.
Restart back into Normal Mode

Now go to the Windows Update website
(http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en) and do a
Custom scan. If you get prompted to install anything, say Yes. When that
is done, Unselect all but one of the listed available updates and
download/install that one update.

If that works correctly then the "quick fix" above worked and hopefully AU
will now work as expected. If the download/install doesn't work then copy
down the full error code you receive and post back here with that info and
more details about your system. Without more information we won't be able
to help you much.
