Automatic update of Entourage and import error

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Power PC Email Client: pop My computer automatically updated me to Entourage 2004 even though my computer said I didn't have enough memory and I pressed the cancel button. A screen popped up very quickly asking me if I wanted to import information from my previous version but it disappeared as quickly. Now I only have Entourage 2004! All of my previous emails, contacts, folders, etc. are missing! When I go to the help menu, it says that if I didn't import the old information I should return to the FILE menu, click on IMPORT, and follow the instructions. The instructions allow me to "Import information from an Entourage archive" or "import information from a program." When I click on either of these I'm taken to all of the choices within my computer and I have no idea what to select. Older versions of Entourage are not highlighted and are not available to me. I really need my old information restored. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated!

My computer automatically updated me to Entourage 2004 even though my computer

It¹s impossible for your computer to automatically update you from an older
version of Office to a newer one. You have to insert the CD and click on
install.

What version of Office did you previously have installed? For example, if
you had Office X, check in the Microsoft User Data folder for the folder
called Office X Identities. This is the folder that would contain your older
info. Select to import the Main Identity from this folder.

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/

Did you remove the older version? How much free space do you have left?

How to check for free space:

I am very much a novice at this, so I'm not sure what happened exactly. I described in my previous message what I experienced. It all happened quickly. As far as I know, I did not remove the older version. Wouldn't I have been asked if I was sure I wanted to delete the old version? All that seemed to happen is that the 2004 version was automatically downloaded and replaced what I had before. Now I don't know how to capture what I had before even though the instructions make it sound simple. I followed your link to the "Activity Monitor" and it says "Page ins 122.28" and "Page outs 0 Bytes" I have no idea what that means. Under "Disk Usage" it says, "Space Utilized 54.27 GB" and "Space Free 1.50 GB" If I need to make space, I'm not sure how to do that. There's a picture of a pie chart on this link that says 55.77 GB. Does this help explain anything? I appreciate your attempt to help.

You are dangerously low on disk space. You have a very small drive for
today. You should have at least 5GB free. If you look at the pie chart
you¹ll see the green space is a sliver. Green is free space.

Do you have an external drive that you could use to backup your data and
move some of it off?

OmniDiskSweeper is a utility for quickly finding big files and thus making
space on your hard disks. (freeware)

You are so low on disk space that even downloading anything is dangerous.
You need to do some clean up. Your best options are to get a bigger drive or
a new computer.

This problem is just too complex to do through email considering your
knowledge of computers.

I really can't afford a new computer, so I backed up the hard drive on an external drive, downloaded the software you recommended, and create 1.25GB of space. All I need to know is where do I go to find the old Entourage settings. As I noted in my first posting, I followed the directions in the "Help" menu. I went to "file," then I went to "import," and then I was supposed to follow the instructions. However, when I clicked on "import" all that happened was that I was given the chance to browse my hard drive to find the file I wanted to import. Nothing with the name Entourage was alive. Can anyone tell me what file I'm supposed to be looking for? I might actually be able to find it on my back-up hard drive if it was lost on my main computer. Again, this is very frustrating and I would appreciate any further guidance I might be able to obtain.

All I need to know is where do I go to find the old Entourage settings.

You never mentioned what version you previously had.

1) Entourage stores your data in a folder named Office X Identities or
Office 2001 Identities folder in the Microsoft User Data folder in
Documents:

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/

2) Under File > Import you want to select from an application. Select the
name of your older version of Office. It should find the correct folder
unless you moved it off during your clean up. If you moved the Identities
folder, move it back.

3) Once you have imported the old Identity, you should delete it.
