Automatic update of numbers in a filename

One of my colleagues is experiencing the most curious things in Word XP. As part of our documents version control we use the version number of a document in the filename (e.g. "Testdoc 1.2.doc"). Now when I send this document to this colleague using e-mail (Outlook XP) and he opens the e-mail he will see the attached document fine with the correct e-mail. If I later send him the same document with proposed changes (document different, but still name "Testdoc 1.2.doc") and he opens the file from the mail, the filename in Word is suddenly changed to "Testdoc 1.22.doc" and the next time "Testdoc 1.23.doc" and so forth....
My other colleagues that I cc on the same e-mail do not have this problem, so it seems to be some sort of setting on that 1 pc that is causing this. I have looked through all the options but I can't pinpoint what would be causing this or how I turn it off, because it is driving me (and my colleague) nuts!!

Anyone any ideas

Just to be clear the document is attached as a file and the mail is composed in Outlook and not send using the "Send to Mail Recipients (for Review)" or "Send to Mail Recipients (as Attachment)" options offered in Word

When you open an attachment in Outlook, the file is temporarily saved to
your hard disk (by default in 'temporary internet files') - what you're
seeing in Word is actually this temporary copy. When you close the
attachment, that temporary file should be deleted. If not, and you
subsequently open an attachment with the same file name, Outlook appends a
digit to create a unique filename.
