Automatic Updates

I am having a problem with autoupdates for microsoft
windows. I run Windows XP and haven't had a problem in
the 3 years since bought the computer.

Usually, a pop up box appears stating that updates are
available and asking if I want to install. At the same
time, the updates icon appears at the bottom right of my
screen with the other start up icons. And the icon stays
there until I click on it to start installation. While
installing, passing my cursor over the icon tells me how
much has downloaded. Once installation is complete, the
icon disappears until the next update notice is sent.

About 4 weeks ago, the usual dialogue box (and icon)
appeared telling me that updates are available. I waited
a few days to begin installation. BUt when I clicked on
the icon, nothing happened and the image remains
at "Downloading 0%" I've tried to open it to see if I
can begin installation another way but nothing happens at
all when I click on the icon. The updates did not
download and now I can't get new updates. How do I fix
this? Appreciate the help.

THanks. But I'm not sure why I should post to windows.
My computer runs Office and the updates are office
