Automatically assign generic resource

S

Sebastian Cordoba

[PS 2007] Hello people.

One of my Custom fields is calculated based on Work. That's why I need that
all of the tasks (except Summary and Milestones) have at least ONE resource.
The problem is that my PM's are used to leave tasks without resources. Is
there a way to automatically assign a generic resource (let's say "Resource
1") for the tasks that don't have resources? Do In need a macro? Isn't there
a simpler way?

Thanks for your help.

What is it that your are trying to achieve with this custom field?

Adding a resource is not the way to go as it will have numerous knock on
effects to the plan, especially EV.

I'd be inclined to write a macro to populate the CF rather than a forumla
(assuming it's a divide by zero error that's causing you problems).

Sebastian:

There are a number of things you can do:

Start with a template that has generic resources assigned already
Use a macro to add resources to non-summary tasks
Use a macro that prohibits the PM from saving the project until all
non-summary tasks have at least one resource

There are other possibilities, but stay mindful of Paul's cautions.

Hi Paul.

You're assuming well. What I'm trying to avoid here is a divide by zero error.

According to your answer and Gary's, I can see that I do need a macro. The
problem is that I don't have any experience developing them, that's why I was
looking for a simpler work around. So, could you tell me where can I find
more information and documentation about macros? How difficult could be the
one I need?

Thanks Paul. Thanks Gary.

Your options are:

ProjectServerExperts & Rod Gill provide a book on programming VBA with
project.

Hire someone to do the work for you.

You could try posting your requirements in the newsgroup to see if anyone
can help (it's always worth a try as people like a challenge).
