Automatically linking/unlinking tables

I have a database that has a BE in a server directory and a FE on the local
drive. When the user is at work (on his laptop) the tables need to be linked
to the BE on the server. However when he takes his laptop out to a
customer's home, he wants to have the data available to view only. Can you
direct me to any code that would help me. I want the user to click on a
button and the tables "unlink" and then when he gets back to work, he clicks
another button and the tables "link".
