Automatically Numbering Documents from a template

I have created a conversation log template, and am trying to figure how to automatically assign a sequential number to the documents. There will be multiple users of this document, but they will only be allowed to access the template from one workstation, to eliminate the chance of duplicate log numbers.

Can anyone help me?
