automatically renumbering captions

Hi:

I'musing Word 2007 and need to merge several multi-page single-chapter
documents with many figures and tables to make a final large multi-chapter
document.

Currently the figures, tables and appendices have the following number scheme:

1,2,3,...

I need to change them to correspond to each chapter so they all have unique
numbers, i.e. 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, etc....

Can you help?

How were the numbers entered into the documents - Using the Caption
facility, or by just typing them in? What is the first style used in each
of the chapters? Also, are the references to the figures, tables etc. in
the text that you would also need to be updated with the chapter number?
