Automatically renumbering in multilevel lists

We are having trouble renumbering mutlilevel lists. I am trying to
automatically number paragraphs such as
1-1.1;
1-1.2;
1-1.3 etc.
The first number is changing and not the last number. This is for each
chapter in the document, i.e. 2-1; 2-1.1; 2-1.2; 2-1.3 etc. Thanks for any
help.

First set up outline numbering, by carefully following the instructions at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.
Especially section 2.1 which instructs that you do Levels 2, 3 etc from
within the Heading 1 customise dialog. Many times users setup Level 1 then
come out and customer Heading 2 separately. If you do this all within Heading
1 the links should be OK.
