Automatically shows all formating marks

Whenever I put an underscore_, Word automatically shows
all formatting marks. I then go to the tools>options>
[VIEW] and uncheck the show all formatting. I then try
again to put an underscore_ and it does the same
everytime. So, how do you stop Word from automatically
showing all formatting marks?

It sounds as if the underscore character has been assigned as a hotkey to
toggle on display of nonprinting characters. Go to Tools | Options, click
the Keyboard... button, choose the ShowAll command from the View category,
and see what keyboard shortcut is assigned. The default is Ctrl+*, but if
you see an assignment that includes the underscore, remove that assignment.
