automatically update style problems

i'm using word 2004 for os x and all of a sudden every time i put something
in bold or add bullets it converts the ENTIRE document to bullets. then i
have to go "undo automatically update style." the extremely irritating thing
is this continues even when i turn off the "automatically update style" option
in the autoformat menu.

extremely annoying... anyone have any ideas? i've even tried cutting and
pasting the entire doc into another document but to no avail. i don't want
to lose ALL my formatting by doing a paste as unformatted text, as it is
quite a long doc (20 pages.)

You need to turn off the "automatically update style" for the style you are
using (probably Normal style). Go to Format | Style, click Modify for the
style in use, and uncheck the "automatically update" box. This is not
retroactive, so you may have to repeat this for older documents.
