Automatically Use...Spelling Checker

Hi

In AutoCorrect "automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker",
the check box is grayed out. How do I make it checkable? I've tried
everything I can think of, including Help.

Also, if I use "automatically use suggestions...", I think there may be some
suggestions used that I might not agree with. I've thought about then
running the spell checker item by item, but I think that by then all the
suggestion would already be fixed in place, and things I don't agree with
won't be picked up. Right? In which case it doesn't behoove me to use
"automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker".

Thanks, Rafael

I'm assuming this is a document that you created so that there's no question
of different languages in use, right? In that case, my best suggestion is
to rename your Word preferences and see if that corrects the problem.

This is correct so I guess you won't have to worry about the preferences at
this point :).

In that case, "automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker"
would only be used when working with a simple document. The writer would be
confident that all the words used in the document were included in the
preferred dictionary. Correct?

I cannot imagine any situation in which you would want AutoCorrect to use
this option. In fact, in Word 2001 I had to borrow a macro to turn it off
every time I launched as it kept coming up checked through some bug. The
really simple/obvious ones are all already predefined in AutoCorrect and the
spelling checker ones (I think) are more likely to be wrong than right.
3.
For future reverence, what do you mean by "rename ... Word preferences"?

Every Mac program has a preferences files in System Folder/Preferences. Any
time a program is misbehaving, one of the first tests is whether generating
a fresh prefs file fixes the problem. If you quit the program, and rename
the file, the program will generate a new one on launch, as it does not see
its old one. (at least, Word won't--I usually drag to the desktop to hide
the old prefs from the program). This is across the board, all programs.

Word-specific instructions may be found on the Troubleshooting Word 2001
link that surely you have been pointed toward before?
http://word.mvps.org/macWordNew/troubleshootWord2001.htm
Look under Word Settings. Settings file, preferences file, prefs file--all
the same.

Hi Beth, Good to hear from you again.

1.
I neglected to mention that there are Spanish and French words in the
document, along with some oddball technical words. These words are what I
had in mind when I posted my question.

2.
When you say "This is correct..." you're refering to my statement: "In which
case it doesn't behoove me to use "automatically use suggestions from the
spelling checker". Right?

In that case, "automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker"
