Automating My Name with Page Numbers in a Word Doc.

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hello, I know how to automate page numbers for a whole document, but what I want is to automate my name and page number in the bottom corner of a document. For example, "Smith p.1., Smith p.2., Smith p.3....." without having to type my name and page number in individually. It needs to appear just like that, with p. for page.

Thank You!

Hi,

place your cursor in the footer, then left- or right-align the text and
type your name, followed by a space and a full stop, then click on the
"#" icon in the "Header & Footer" section of the Formatting Palette (if
it isn't visible, click on View>Formatting Palette).

If you want this text to appear automatically in every new document you
create, you can modify your Normal template, which is the default
template on which every new document is based. To do that, open Word,
then click on File>Open and navigate to ~/Library/Application
Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates. Open the file Normal.dotm, make
the changes described in the previous paragraph, then save the document
and close it. If you now create a new document, it will have the text in
the footer by default.

Unlike my friend Michel I don't encourage customization of Normal.dotm for
something of this nature :) If it isn't worth creating a specific custom
template comprising those customizations there usually are other options
available. In this case I'd suggest using AutoText.

Go into the Footer of a document that has the content as you want it (or set
it up in a new document). Select the Footer content then go to Insert>
AutoText> New. You can give it a name of your choice if you wish. Make the
name at least 4 characters with no spaces [such as your first & last initial
followed by 'pn': i.e., expn].

When you want to add it to a document just double-click the bottom of a page
to get into the Footer, type expn then press return. Alternatively you can
insert it from the Inset> AutoText > Header & Footer menu as well as assign
a keyboard shortcut to it.

One of several advantages is that you can also use it in pre-existing
documents, not just new ones. Someone may also be able to tell you how to
create an Apple Script to further automate entering it.

Thanks for the replies, but both of these suggestions will only allow me to insert the same thing in a header or footer (e.g. Smith, p.1). I need each page to read differently (e.g. Smith p.1. .....then, Smith p.2)

The suggestions you gave me do not allow me to change page numbers.

Do you have any other suggestions?

I suspect you have not tried what they suggested, or you have not followed
their suggestion exactly.

It works for me :)

Would you mind explaining in different words?

I am able to get my name in the header of each page, but am unable to get my name with ordered page number 1, 2, 3,.... after it.

To repeat what Michel said:

" place your cursor in the footer, then left- or right-align the text and
type your name, followed by a space and a full stop, then click on the
"#" icon in the "Header & Footer" section of the Formatting Palette (if
it isn't visible, click on View>Formatting Palette).

The Header and Footer section of the Formatting Palette will appear only if
you are already in the header or footer. The # icon is labelled ³Insert
page number² if you hover over it. It inserts a field that resolves to the
number of the page it currently appears on.

You could also search for ³Page Numbers² in the Word help, although the
descriptions there are too simplistic to add much information.

Cheers

It sounds like you are typing the number 1 rather than inserting a Page
Number field. Follow the instructions explicitly & use the referenced button
to insert the field. Anything you literally type will not update.
