Automating section and subsection numbering

I am using Word for XP Professional.

I have a long document consisting of one long file, divided into 18
chapters, and subsections up to four levels. (e.g., 1.12.6.3). I would like
to automate my chapter and subsection numbering so that when I move parts
around, the numbering changes automatically, AND any cross references to the
moved subsections will also change.

It seems I should use LISTNUM fields. However, none of the three formats
provided are acceptable to me. Even if (none) is selected for the List name,
the field returns a number with a following closing parenthesis, e.g.:

Chapter 1)

I don't want this closing parenthesis. I want the field to return simply "1"
.. Then, I want subsequent fields to return 1.1, 1.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, etc.
depending on the outline structure. This is standard academic style (at
least in my field), so it ought to be an option.

How do I do that? (I think I can figure out the cross-referencing issue once
the numbering is fixed).

Thanks for any help.

Thank you, and Shauna, for this. So, I am now using heading styles to
produce my chapter and outline numbers. Now, can someone tell me if there is
a way to cross-reference parts of the outline, even when the numbering
changes? For example, I say things like "As discussed in section 2.3.5, . .
.." What if I move 2.3.5 around so that it is now 4.4? I want the cross
reference to automatically change and always point to the same part of the
doc. I need a field that will return the outline number of the heading in
which a bookmark occurs. The bookmarks won't change, but the heading numbers
often do.

Thanks again for any help.

Heading numbering is automatically bookmarked. Insert | Cross-reference
(Insert | Reference | Cross-reference in Word 2002 and above) and select
Heading: Paragraph number.
