Automation error catastrophic failure

I have a shared workbook used by 8 people. Some are Win XP, some are Win
2000. All are Office 2003.

From time to time, the workbook becomes corrupted. Opening the sheet yields
the Microsoft Visual Basic error message "Automation error catastrophic
failure". The only way out is to task manager close of the Excel application.
To "fix" the problem, a pc must be found that can open the spreadsheet; then
turn off sharing (and thus losing all change history).

We initially experienced this problem when a Excel 2000 user opened and
saved the workbook, then the work book was corrupted for all 2003 users.

We then made the workbook a 2003 worksheet (not openable by 2000 users).
But we are still getting the occasional corruption. Most recently, some 2003
users could open the workbook, but others could not.

The last person to touch the spreadsheet the last 3 incidents was the same
person each time (at least, according to the log of changes). However, we
have done testing with this person (XP & Office 2003) and could not reproduce
the problem.

Argggggh.

Any suggestions?
