Automation objects specific to windows version ?

Hi,

I am a newbie to word automation and want to implement some
editing/management of word documents in my .Net application.

I understand that the automation components would be specific to
versions of word/office.
But are automation components also specific to the windows platform
that MS-Office is installed on?
Or can i expect everything that works on one version of
windows, to work smoothly on any other versionof windows as long as the
office version is the same.
