Autonumber duplicates

I have a linked table (on a server) set up that holds details of quotes. I
use an autonumber field to keep the sequence of records as they type them in.

I have been presented a problem, the lines occasionally jumble themselves
up. After scratching my head numerous times, I have discovered that the
autonumber field suddenly jumps back some 30,000 numbers and starts to
increment again. This is causing duplicate numbers.

Has anyone heard of this happening and what causes it?

This was a fault in the JET engine, and it was fixed several service pack
releases back.

You can download SP8 for JET 4 from:

Applying the service pack will prevent the problem recurring, but it won't
sort out the problems you already have. To solve that, use the code in this
