Autonumber Issue Delete

I'm having a problem with autonumber ... when I DELETE a record (from a form), the record is deleted in a table, but the next record that I try to append to the table tries to use a previously-used ID number so the append fails (autonumber is my primary key)

Has anyone seen this

Other information

Windows 2000 Pro (OS) with latest SP
Latest Jet S
Office XP with latest SP
