Autonumber question

Hi
Could someone give me a 1000ft overview of autonumber. I have a table that
has been working correctly but now it is adding the next available record to
the beginning of the table. I'm concerned that it will either overwrite data
when it reaches a number that already exists or will throw an error at that
time. There are many related subtables with information so recreating the
index is not an option at this point.
