autonumber started over again at 1!

I have a table that contains over a thousand records. The primary key is an
autonumber field. The form used to add records to this table, however, has
just begun numbering all new records from 1 again. And then, of course,
refuses to save them, as it creates duplicates in the index. Any ideas here??
The only change I made to the form was the addition of a combobox to enable
users to filter the records.
I'm utterly baffled.
Help...?

The 3rd cause may be relevant, and the code should fix it if a simple
compact/repair does not.

Thanks! I haven't tried the suggestions yet, but it's a relief to know the
problem isn't unheard of. This has already been one of those great 'learning
opportunities'. It'll be even better if I can solve the problem.
