i can only add autonumber at the beginning of an empty document. And t
add to my misery, after inserting many names, when i try to arrang
them (and their corresponding addresses) the autonumber change
together with the name. Then i will get a list in alphabeticall
ordered form but the numbers are haywire. Any solutions

Hi Kaiallard,

When you say "empty document", do you mean an Access table? If not,
you're probably asking in the wrong place.

Autonumber fields in Access don't work like automatic numbering in Word.
If an Access table contains an Autonumber field, each record is given a
number the instant it is created, and these numbers do not change
subsequently. The purpose of Autonumber is simply to provide a unique
value for every record.

Please post back giving more information on what you're trying to
achieve and someone here will probably be able to help.

You need to understand that the autonumber is PERMENANTLY
assigned to that record. Also, if you first start to
create a record, and the autonumber is created, then
immediately delete or [ESC] the record, thus eliminating
it, autonumber will continue to increment even tho you got
rid of the record. Using autonumber is most often used as
the key ID field. If you want to use a number field that
changes, use a number field that is not autonumber. Then,
increment it through a query or form. Reassign numbers
using an update query or other method.
