autonumber

Some of my work orders are numbered when I get them, and I
enter that into my form. Is there a way to also have an
autonumber set up for the same field, so when I get one
that is not numbered, access will autonumber that field if
I don't actually enter one in myself? Please email, I
don't get much chance to check the newsgroups.

Answered in the Forms newsgroup.

Hint: It's considered impolite to "multipost" the same message to
multiple newsgroups. If you wish to post the message to two or three
*appropriate* newsgroups - say, forms and gettingstarted in this case
- then Crosspost (put both newsgroup names in the Newsgroups line)
rather than multiposting.

An idea would be to use the default value entry in
properties to insert the the maximum number already used
(DMax in the same field), increased by one; if your order
has a number you can simply overwrite, otherwise leave the
value defaulted in the form.

Of course, if your order numbers are not strictly numeric,
this is not a good idea! Alternatively, you could add an
autonumber field in your table and have the from default
in the value of the autonumber field, which you can
overwrite when you have a real order number.
