Autonumbering gone askew

Hi
I have a database with an unusual, I thought impossible
problem. When we go to add a new record the autonumbering
gives us a number already in use, of course leading to
not being able to store the information. There are only
20,000 records in the db, which is stored on the server
and accessed by 5 employees only.
Any suggestions on how I can get the autonumbering to
resume its correct numbering without having to rebuild
the entire database would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

This is a known bug in some releases of Access2000 and AccessXP as
well; See

and references therein.
