Can anyone tell me what is the name of the auto recover file (extension such
as normal.dot) and where can one find it on the C: drive?

Start Word then from the menu select Tools>Options then click on the File
Locations tab
Look under Auto Recovery files for the location and click on modify to see
the whole path (but don't make any changes).

I use OfficeXp which displays the location path on my system as:
C:\Document and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\StartUp
