AutoRecover in Excel v.X not working.

S

super64..

I'm working on a password protected excel file created on a windows
version of Excel. I'm able to open it, edit and save the file. I
discovered last night that my autorecover was not automatically saving
the file.(Basically lost 1.5 hours of work) I checked the setting to
make sure it was on and I even tried using "save as" and creating a new
file without the password protection. Excel still does not autosave.
Any other ideas? Thanks.

AutoRecover and AutoSave are different beasts. AutoSave, which is not
included in XLv.X or XL04, left a persistent backup copy. AutoRecover
doesn't - when you close the XL application, the temporary files
generated by AutoRecover are deleted. The only time you should see
AutoRecover's copy is if XL crashes.

One method I use is to force new XL files to save backups. I create a
new workbook, with the number of sheets, formatting, etc., that I want,
and save it in the Microsoft Office 2004:Office:Startup:Excel folder *as
a template* with the name "Workbook" (no quotes, no extension). In the
Save dialog, I click Options, and check the Always create backup
checkbox.

All new workbooks created with CMD-N or File/New will use that template
to create the workbook, and all will automatically save a backup.

The key then, of course, is to Save often. As with Word, I generally hit
CMD-s every time I pause for thought.
