does anyone know how to recover .asd files in ms word 2007? i tried
everything on the microsoft online help site and googled every possible word
combination regarding this matter. but everytime i try to open the .asd file,
i get ""ms word can't open this file because it is an unsupported file type".
i've tried open and repair, i've rebooted a lot of times and i've tried
changing the extension name but it still can't recover my work.
btw, it contains screenshots and not just text in it. it's really impt.

Only Word can open .asd files, and it does so automatically when you first
open Word after a crash or hang.

Which suggests that the asd file must be corrupt beyond recognition -
especially as it doesn't open using Open and Repair or Recover Text from any
File options.

thanks for replying.

i know that there should've been a document recovery task pane once you open
word after a crash or hang but the thing is, it didn't appear. i don't know
if it's just a bug in the 2007 version or what but this happened twice
already. so two documents i wasn't able to recover.

how could it be corrupted when i opened the asd file like five minutes after
the hang?

i was able to open it through Open and Repair and Recover Text from any file
methods but it just wasn't able to show my screen shots.

What you haven't made clear is why it is necessary for you to try to open
the asd file rather than simply opening the doc file you created. What is
happening to make this necessary as that would seem to be at the root of the
corruption problem.

Have you tried renaming the *.asd files to *.docx, *.docm and *.doc to see if
it opens with one of these filenames then?

I guess this could help because Word has some file format problems with
autosaves:
When Word's default save format is *.doc but you work on a *.docm file,
autorecovery files of your *.docm will be only saved in *.doc-format.
(that's a bug of Word 2007)
