Processor: Intel

Everytime i go to use or enter an autoshape my system freezes. i click insert/picture/autoshape and when i do Word does not respond and i eventually have to force quit because it won't respond.
I have tried reloading the software a few times but everytime i do i still get the same problem.
Please... does anyone know what i can do to fix this problem.

My guess is that that's a corrupted "Document Elements" template.

Quit Word, find the following file, and drag it to the desktop:
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Document Elements/Document
Elements.dotx

If that doesn't cure it, go for the big fix:

1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

2) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer,
and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has
no extension.

3) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have
moved it, it should be in
/Users/ ~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

4) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

5) Now re-start Word 2008 and it should be OK.

Be thorough with this, if you leave any of these files behind Word 2008 will
find them and won't replace them. Do it right and Word will construct a
new, clean, set of preferences and everything should now work.

Hope this helps

Hi Holihan -

....And in addition to John's suggestions -- by "reloading the software" do
you mean reinstalling it or simply re-launching the program?

If reinstalling please do yourself a favor and divorce yourself from that
idea altogether. Reinstalling Office *rarely* fixes anything and is *never*
the first step in an effort to correct problems. In fact, it can make
matters worse.

It would also be useful to know what specific update level your Office
installation is at -- 12.1.2 is the most current update.

Hi,
I'm experiencing this same exact problem. John, I have the 2004 version, and couldn't find "document elements" in my office folder. I'm also lost with the normal instructions, as I can't seem to locate user templates in my computer either. Could you possibly further elaborate on how I might get rid of the corrupted file? Apologies for my lack of computer saviness.

My guess is that that's a corrupted "Document Elements" template.

No, you are NOT experiencing the "exact same problem" :) You can't be, you
have a different version of the software (which doesn't HAVE the file in
question).

Please post a new question, filling in your version information as prompted,
so we know how to answer you.

Cheers

Sorry: Am I missing a piece of your post? There does not seem to be a
question there?

Please be aware that I am not seeing the same view as you are: there are
more than 40 different servers hosting this content, it would be pure luck
for me to connect to the same one you are. Messages are displayed in a
different order.

So please: Full Description of your software (just as you have it below)
and a DETAILED description of your problem. Then hopefully I can figure out
what is wrong and tell you how to fix it in one day instead of three days
:)

Cheers

Good. The Second solution is a bit destructive :) It takes Word 2008 back
to "Factory Settings". So don't use it unless you really HAVE to :)

Cheers

Thank you so much, IT WORKDED... the second solution worked perfectly.

Dear John,
Sorry for late response

I have a MacBook:
Mac Version: 10.4.11
Word 2004 for mac Version: 11.5.0
Operating System: Mac
OS X
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

The problem: Every time I try to insert/picture/autoshapes from my microsoft word, all of word freezes up and does not respond until I force quit the application. There seems to be no other issue with inserting other pictures, only autoshapes.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Right: That's probably corrupt preferences, but it could be a corrupt
Normal template.

Work through the procedures here:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

Do them in order, and don't skip any: the sequence is important.

I think you will find it comes right when you replace the preferences.

Cheers

Thank you John!
It was a corrupt preference, and those instructions solved the issue.
Thanks again!

Great: Yes, the indication was fairly diagnostic...

However, the reason for the sequence is that if the Template is bad, the new
preference that get created may also be bad :)
