Autosizing a text box width

Is there an attribute for a textbox which will make it expand to accomodate
a word, even if the font size of the word is changed?

Format, Shape, Text Box, "Resize shape to fit text" radio button

Sounds right, but if I stretch the box wide, it stays there, change font
size... nothing happens.

If you choose insert > textbox and stretch a box onto the screen it will stay
that width.

If you just click and type it will expand (as long as the default textbox is
set to "resize to fit text").
