AutoText Entries Disappear

Philip Sellers

I have an office that I support. The office is standardized on
Microsoft Office XP (2002). One user keeps losing her AutoText
entries. All users in this office are using AutoText, however this is
the only user who is losing her entires. I can't figure out what is
causing this. I made a backup copy of her normal.dot template in case
this happened again, however, now the entries in that template are
gone as well.

What could be happening? The user says that she has not gotten any
error messages concerning overwriting her Normal.dot. Our login
scripts that I setup personally, do not touch their Normal.dot files.
No one is coming in and replacing these files at any time.

What could this be??

Thanks in advance.

This is almost certainly a result of overwriting Normal.dot with a document
or template, and that in turn is usually caused by misbehaving add-ins (the
Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word, for example, updates Normal.dot every
time you close Word, and it is strongly suspected in the "blank doc not
blank" issue). Does the user have "Prompt to save the Normal template"
checked on the Save tab of Tools | Options? This would at least give her a
chance to say no. If you rename Normal.dot and let Word generate a fresh
copy, it will contain the built-in AutoText (any custom entries will have
been lost), but if the problem persists, you might want to move any custom
AutoText to a global template that is less likely to be subject to these
problems.

AutoText is stored in a users normal.dot unless otherwise specified. Is the
user opening new documents from a different template and saving them with
that template instead?

Or are all the users in the office sharing the same AutoText? If so, how is
it being shared?
