Autotextlist Gone

I recently upgraded to Word 2007 from Word 2003. In my 03 documents I had a
lot of Autotextlist entries. When I open these 03 documents in 07 the
Autotextlist entries are gone. How do I recover them without having to
recreate each one? I will eventually use them along with 07s building blocks
to enhance the documents.

Autotext entries are stored in templates, by default the normal template (in
Word 2003). If you installed Word 2007 as an upgrade the autotext entries
should have been retained, however, if you have a copy of your old Word 2003
normal.dot template, delete or rename the new normal.dotm template (if you
have not changed the location where Word stores its templates you can find
it by typing %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates in the Address bar of Explorer.)
and copy the old normal.dot file to that same folder. Word 2007 when started
will rebuild a new normal.dotm template based on normal.dot, containing the
autotext entries.

Do note that autotext in Word 2007 works entirely differently from Word
2003. In particular there is no autocomplete. Entries must be selected from
a menu or their names typed and F3 pressed to insert. It may therefore be
posible that the entries have been transferred, but you have not been aware
of them. Check the Insert Quick Parts > building block organizer.

Thanks, works great! Replacing normal.dotm with a backup of my old
normal.dot fixed the problem and still function the same in 07 as it did in
03 (I do not have to use the F3 key - just right click and select).

In Word 2007 is there a way to modify the items that are in an autotextlist
(add or delete individual items)?

Autotext's can be added by selecting and pressing ALT+F3 much as before
(though ensure you save them in the autotext category) and they are still
filed according to the paragraph styles applied to them, so if you use an
autotextlist field the entries will reflect the stylename. Entries can be
deleted (and moved around) from the building blocks organizer.
Once you have saved the normal.dotm template you can remove the normal.dot
template from the folder to a place of safety.
