AutoTextList problem

Using Word 2002.

I have a form which uses several AutoTextList fields, and in some
cases the same 'list' is used to populate more than one field in the
form - i.e., the same 'list' may be used more than once.

When an item is selected from the list, a checkmark appears in the
drop-down list, to the left of that item. (This checkmark 'sticks'
with the selection even when closing and restarting Word, i.e., Word
'remembers' the last selection made in that particular list). The
field may or may not actually get populated by the selection - seems
completely random and intermittent.

Use F11 to jump to the next field, then right-click to open the
selection list. The list opens and the checkmark is showing against
the item I selected last time. If I now try to select a different
item from the list, the field remains unpopulated. Very occasionally,
if I keep selecting this new item, say 3-4 times, the new selection
will then populate the field. However ALMOST ALWAYS the new selection
will not populate the field.

It's got me thoroughly baffled, but I'm sure someone here will know
the answer! Thanks!
