avi links do not work

Some of my videos work some don't. Yes I did upload the video via FTP then
copy the address and created a hyperlink on my website to link to that not to
the video on my harddrive. Some work, some don't. Even had them work once
and not a second time. I use Yahoo geocities as my web hosting. Here's my

All that I tried worked.

Did you have some that didn't work and you went back and corrected some of
the links?

If you did you probably have the old link in cache. To fix reboot or clear
the cache.

No, I have not updated or changed a thing. I just tried all those on this page
http://www.geocities.com/wiemannqh/index_index.htm
and everyone of them takes me to a Yahoo! Geocities site (my web hosting)
that says "Unable to process request at this tim--error 999"
This morning I got that on some and on others media player actually opened,
took for ever to load (5 minutes) and then said "Window Media Player cannot
play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not
support the codec that was used to compress the file."
Whether it has anything to do with it or not in MS Pub I went to
tools/internet options/ and unchecked the boxes on the second page about
compressing...before I saved and published to the web. Should I be doing
that or not?
There is also a little tool box that you can click on to compress pictures
before
publishing....is this a good thing to do or not to do if there are also
videos. (avi files) - I did not do this.

It appears that you did upload the files and write the links correctly. I
suspect part of your problem is with Geocities. I had problems
intermittently trying to connect to your files, but eventually made
connection. Then the download speed was really slow...about half of what I
normally get using this machine with a dial-up connection. I also noticed
that some of those files are as much as 5 megs in size. With my normal dial
up connection and download speed, it can take 4 to 5 minutes to download one
meg, so perhaps you should post the size of the file with the download link
to warn people of how long it will take if they aren't using broadband.

I did download one of your avi files and tried to play it, and also got the
error "ClassFactory Cannot Supply Requested Class". I Googled that and got
440 hits, and perhaps you can find the answer that way. Though I have never
produced an avi file, I suspect it has something to do with the way you are
doing that, but doubt that this issue or the other issues of making the
connections to the files has to do with Publisher. Maybe someone else will
have a better answer for you. Sorry.

Don't use the avi format. Use mpeg files. avi files are very codec dependent.
For online use you need to use either mpeg (wide support) or mov (Quicktime).

I changed some to mpeg files. That didn't work either. I contacted the web
hosting company and they say "they all work just fine"....they won't work for
me or the 4 other people that I had try on different servers.

professional photos or you can purchase a collection, a good source is

If you meant the next paragraph that doesn't make sense either because mine

and that I am talking about in the article. Unix is case sensitive. Meaning
"MYfile.mpg" is one filename while "myfile.mpg" is a different filename. If
a hyperlink points to a non-existent file then the hyperlink is a bad link.
On Unix if you tell the link to look for BUBBAGUMP.file then that is what it
looks for. It won't pay any attention to bubbagump.file

Nancy,

Further to the explanation that David Bartosik provided, if you look at the
"cutting video 1" that you said has consistently worked, then you will note
the MPG file is named "MOVO1589.MPG", while the "cutting video 2" file is
named "MEcuttting.MPG" as per your link. If you Right Click > Save Target As
the first video, then the file that is downloaded is "MOVO1589.mpeg". And if
you try to download the second video file you get an error. Bottom line is
you need consistency on not only how you name your files, but also your
links to those files, including the file extensions.

In the case of "cutting video 1" the .MPG extension apparently is
interchangeable with .mpeg, but I wouldn't assume that this works all the
time. If you are using WinXP and don't have your computer set up to show the
file extensions, then it might be helpful to go to Start > Settings >
Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Under Advanced settings, untick
"Hide extensions for known file types" > OK. If you are using Win98 then
Start > Settings > Folder Options, etc. Then you will be able to view the
extensions in addition to the file names.

That took all of 2 seconds. You really just need to pay attention to
details.

For example - when I hovor over the link I see it is looking for

greyandbos.mpeg

when I right click the link and select, save target as, I find the file is
actually

greyandbos.avi
