Can anyone tell me why an avi movie file that I've dropped into a PPT slide
opens with the image visible and then goes black for the duration of the file
playing? Audio comes through just fine, but no image. Using PPT 2007 with a
Dell running Vista.

Hi there

Sounds like a file path length issue to me:
1. Create a folder directly on your hard drive (e.g. C:\ppt)
2. Move presentation and video file to the folder
3. Reinsert the video through Insert -> Movie -> Movie from file

If you are still having problems have a look at Austin Myer's great site:

First off, video files are not embedded in 2007 but linked so check tha
the avi files are on the new computer. Other issues it could be:
codec problem - see if the avis run in the mci player (PowerPoint use
this to run videos, not Windows Media Player)
file path length problem - try moving ppt and avi to the same folde
directly on your C drive then reinsert the av
