Avoiod tasks being split

Hi,

I am trying to avoid tasks being split.
I have a couple of subtasks in my current planning assigned to a certain
resource (in this case a video encoding machine) that are being interrupted
to perform the same task, listed under another main task. After wich it goes
back to the task it had already started.

I understand that this is the 'fastest' way to complete the overall project,
but since we are working with encoding machines that work best if they can
finish a job from start to end at once, I would like to avoid splitting those
tasks.

Setting a fixed date for the beginning of this task does do the job,
however, this messes with the dynamics of the planning so I would like to
avoid that (my planning often changes, tasks never take the same time).

I have been trying to find out how to achieve this, but until now without
succes. Does anybody know of a way to do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Kind regards,

Hello aernoud,

Try adding the field Leveling Can Split to a task view. Set the value
to "No" for those tasks you do not wish split by resource leveling.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hello Julie,

I am having a similar type of splitting of tasks. What is the best way to
avoid splitting -- even though a resource is still underallocated? Is the
"field leveling" similar to the "Resource Levelling" function ?

Thanks,
Dip

Hi Dip,

Adding the field "Leveling Can Split" and setting it to No means that
when you use the Resource Leveling command, it will not split the
task. If you don't use Resource Leveling, changing the field doesn't
do anything.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Julie,

I can use it now to avoid splitting! So, I really need not click out the
boxes that say:
1) Clear leveling values before leveling
2) Level only within available slack
3) Leveling can create splits in remaining work.

Because all these would be covered by the field "Leveling Can Split"?

You're welcome Dip. I wouldn't go so far as to say you don't need to
deal with the other options. The Leveling can split only prevents
tasks from being split. They can still be delayed by leveling.
Generally, I leave "Clear leveling values" checked. That option
allows Project to possibly remove the delays added by earlier
leveling. The "Level only within available slack" option I usually
leave enabled on the first pass but may remove it if I need to.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
