Awful Struggle with Word 2002

Hi--

I've read the Help document 6+ times--many sections more than that. I've
been working on a single web page design for days. I've made some
progress but it has been very slow and difficult. So many features--many
tucked away in obscure places...

How do I get up the learning curve--fast? I've got work to do.

I'm going to post my most troubling questions of the moment here.
Hopefully this thread will become helpful to others as well as me.

1. AutoText--I've created a logo as WordArt in a Word document. I want to
keep this in AutoText or somewhere where I can frequently access it fast
for insertion in web pages or print documents. How do I do this?

2. When a drawing object is on a drawing canvas of the same size how can
I tell if I've selected the object or the canvas?

3. How can I readily distinguish if a drawing object is inline or
floating? On a canvas or off?

4. Is there a really good source online--Web or elsewhere--that will help
me understand Word, particularly in regard to creating Web pages? If not,
what is the best book? Should I use a program other than Word for web
pages?

5. Finally, at some point in my many manipulations yesterday, the
document started errratically blinking at me--a sort of neurotic flicker.
No, it's not my head or eyes and I turned off the Norton Anti-Virus
plugin for Word. How can I stop the flicker? I'm running XP on a P4 @
1.7Ghz with 768MB RAM.

Thanks.

1. The autotext feature is clearly defined in the HELP files. Insert the
wordart into any document. Select the paragraph return to which the wordart
is anchored. Hit Insert-Autotext, type a name, and hit okay. To use it in
the doc, type the name you gave it and hit F3.

2. I don't believe the drawing canvas is selectable, it only appears when
you open the drawing. You can even turn off the use of the drawing canvas
under Tools-Options, General tab.

3. When you click on an object, the little white circles (in Word XP and
higher, which is what I assume you're using) indicate it's NOT in line with
text. In line with text objects get a border with little black squares in
the corners and sides when it's selected.

4. To my knowledge, no. I also advise that no one should attempt a big web
undertaking with Word. Use FrontPage, which is designed for this purpose.

5. This can be caused by any number of issues, such as tables that are set
to text wrapping, lack of resources on the machine (for refreshing the
view), a bad graphics card (but then many programs should do it). Wish I
could help more with that one...I'd probably ask that one separately.

Hope this helps!

Hi Anne,
2. I don't believe the drawing canvas is selectable
Sure it is :) You can drag it anywhere on the page, for
one thing. You can also format it to look like any
AutoShape (instead of a rectangle), add a border, a fill...

Hi Bc,
2. When a drawing object is on a drawing canvas of the same size how can
I tell if I've selected the object or the canvas?
If you've selected the object, you'll see "handles" (the white circles
around the edge); if you've selected the canvas you won't see any handles
on any of the objects within the canvas.

Thanks, Cindy! I'm learning! There are features I never use because I hate
them. I turn the drawing canvas off. I think, when I get a real version (not
trial) of Office 2003 in a couple days, I'm gonna leave all the settings
alone. I support the products too much. I've mostly had the luxury of being
able to tell people to do it my way. I'm learning a bunch by watching
Suzanne's answers too. (Hard to believe I wrote a book, huh?)

Can I tell you...? I must have sent at least a million people to your site
for the merge codes. You can blame all that bandwidth on me. :)

Hi Anne,

I know exactly what you mean :) It's only because I wrote a
professional-level book (in German) and was testing things left,
right and upside down that I knew about this one said:

Send 'em along. I can't imagine cabel.com (who ultimately owns
swissonline) being upset about lots of people hitting their site
<g> After all, that's what I pay 'em for; and considering the
absolutely lousy job they're doing with the email account (losing
emails), I'm glad to know I'm getting *something* for my money!
