Back End Requires Repair

We have an Access 2000 database split front end/back end.
Usually max 8 concurrent users.
Today I returned to worried faces saying that no-one could use the database.
On opening the back end, a repair operation started automatically.

Is this the beginning of the end?
Is this to be expected in a multi user database environment, or does this
indicate a weakness in the back end file?
As the repair completed satisfactorily, I simply checked that front end
operation was normal and went on my way.
Should I have retrieved a backup copy rather than persisting with a back end
that had corrupted itself somehow?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Yes, I have a compact utility which compacts the back end file at night.
It also copies the current back end to my local drive in case of problems.
However, this was an in-use failure which has not occurred before.
Is this the beginning of the end?
