Back Up Registry

P

PAK

Where do I start? My computer automatically installed the latest security
updates last night. Some of my programs are hanging when opening or saving –
MS Word & Excel. My System Restore was not on for reasons I need not explain
here.

I have read the security update MS06-015. I intend to change my registry
settings as Microsoft suggests. However, the Windows XP Backup Utility hangs
just like Word and Excel so I can’t backup my System State.

Is there a manual way to back it up?

Thank you for your help.

In Regedit, click on the key listed in step 3 of the
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165 article:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached

Then select the menu item File > Export. Navigate to a usable location
such as My Documents, and supply a file name (Regedit automatically
supplies the .reg extension). That writes a file that backs up the
specific key, its contents, and its subkeys.

Now make the change described in the article. If it doesn't help, or
if it breaks something, you can restore the previous registry
contents: First use Regedit to remove the value you added (the .reg
file can add and change values, but it won't delete them). Then use
Windows Explorer to go to the folder where you saved the .reg file,
and double-click the file's icon. Answer yes to the prompt.

Bear in mind that this method backs up one key and its contents, not
the entire registry. Don't go poking around in other parts of the
registry or change things "just to see what they do".
