backend and front end

Am I correct in thinking that the backend are the data
tables and the front end are the forms and reports?????

Yes.

Front end includes queries, modules, and macros as well, and has linked
tables (i.e. linked to the b.e.).

In some cases, static lookup tables (such as postal codes) might be stored
in the front end.
