background artifact

Occassionally, when I download Word documents from the web, I will get
a gray grid as a background that only appears in the Page Layout view
(my default).

This grid looks amazingly like one I created for myself as a
background for a particular project a year or so ago. The grid only
appears on documents I download. It does not appear on any of my own
documents (new or otherwise).

I cannot get rid of the background using Format: Background (No Fill
or white)

I am using Word X for Mac Service Release 1

Two questions:

1. How can I get rid of this background, which appears to be an
artifact of something I created a long time ago?

2. If I cannot get rid of this background, if I edit one of these
documents and send it to someone else am I passing on the background
(or whatever this grid is)? I'm filling out a grant application so I'd
like to know it's clean.

Thanks

See what happens if you View | Header/Footer, and then try to select the
grid and delete it.

and what happens if you uncheck Table | Gridlines?

Is the Word doc you downloaded public, so that someone can test whether
it happens on machines other than yours?

The grid does not appear in the header or footer and is not selectable
when viewing header/footer.
and what happens if you uncheck Table | Gridlines?

It was unchecked, but toggling on and off produced no change.

I can test it on other machines in my house. No problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Word does have a Document Grid, which you can look up in the Help (I don't
have a copy of Mac Word here to look it up right now). It's a document
property, and I think you get to it through File>Properties.

If you temporarily delete all of the text and the grid does not go away,
that's what it is. If it goes away when you delete all the text, it's a
background shading :)

Cheers

If all else has failed - Turn on the Drawing toolbar while one of the docs
is open. Then click the Draw button, select Grid & see if there is s check
in the box for: Display gridlines on screen. I believe this is a
doc-specific setting, so you'll probably have to do the same for each one
that has it displayed... If this is the culprit :)
