Background change does not print

When I change the background from fill effects on a page, it still prints out white. What do I need to do for background to stay and print?

How are you creating the background in the first place? There's a
Background command that only shows in Online View, and that only takes
effect if you Save As Web Page--it's not designed to print.

What version of Word?

I have 2008 version. I go to View then to Toolbars and click Background. Page changes but will not print the effect. How do I do that?

Word>Preferences>Print...."Print background colours and images..."

The setting needs to be applied to each document, because it is off by
default.
