Background covers text

I am trying to make a table with a checkerboard type appearance. Half of the
cells are white with black text, no problem. However the cells that are black
with white text print out completely black, the text is completely obscured.
In print preview it looks great but the printout is unusable. In Word 2003
this worked flawlessly with this computer and this printer. What has changed
in 2007 that is causing this result?

My PC is running Windows XP Professional with the latest service pack and
drivers. However my workplace has a contract with Microsoft that allowed me
to get a free copy of Office 2007. So I am running Office 2007 on a Windows
XP machine. I don't know if the Vista drivers for my HP Color Laserjet 3800
should be installed or not. If they are incompatable with XP I might lose my
printing ability all together.

So yes, I have installed the latest XP drivers. I don't know what will
happen if I try to install Vista drivers. Will they even work at all?

Have you checked for a new version of your printer driver since upgrading to
a new version of Word?

For what it's worth I have occasionally experienced problems with printing
black with 2003 with complex graphics. Have you tried replacing the black
with a colour or the darkest grey just to prove the point
